Chemistry 201 – Career Map

By Maria Greene|May 18, 2015|Mapping|0 comments

Hello All,

This a map of my chemistry students’ future goals and career choices. The idea for this map was chosen to motivate the students to do well in chemistry and to keep pushing toward their goals. Many students enter the classroom with great concerns about not doing well in chemistry. Many of those concerns stem from varying experiences that each of them had with science in the past. These inhibitions can prevent them from being successful in chemistry as well as in other science courses.  Being engaged in conversations and having to write about their career choices were very useful in the sense that they were reminded why they must not give up. The map serves as a visual reminder that there is someplace that each of them need to be and there is something that they each need to do to get there.

Many of the students were concern about privacy therefore they assigned themselves names of chemical elements.

At first, I wanted to become a nurse but overtime I began to sway more to becoming a doctor. I am now taking the prerequisites that are needed for medical school. I am planning on graduating from The Borough of Manhattan Community College with my associate’s degree in science. I would like to pursue my goal of becoming a doctor at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

My career goal is to become a mechanical engineer. I am an engineering major at the Borough of Manhattan Community College and I will transfer to Hunter College in Spring 2016. There I will pursue a major in mechanical engineering. I am acquiring a great amount of knowledge in my science courses but I want to use that knowledge to create ‘stuff.’ In the words of Walter Vincenti, “Engineers use knowledge primarily to design, produce, and operate artifacts. … Scientists, by contrast, use knowledge primarily to generate more knowledge.”

Antimony (Sb)

My career goals is to become a physician assistant (PA) and own a small farm. Strange combination, I know. I plan on transferring to The City College of New York for the PA program. Many people have encourage me to become a doctor but I really do not desire to do so at this point in time. I figure that becoming a physician assistant will not consume my time as much as would becoming a doctor. This way, I will have time for my other passion which is farming. Why farming? I have some experience farming and I just love it.

I enjoy being around children and I have always desire to become a pediatrician. I am currently pursuing a science degree at The Borough of Manhattan Community College. I intend to transfer to The New York University where I will continue to pursue my career goal on becoming a pediatrician. I started at BMCC because the tuition is cheaper and the courses that I need to pursue medicine are accepted at major colleges and universities. I have to strategically plan my every move since I have other commitments in life and my decisions will affect those who depend on me.

I am pursuing an engineering degree at The Borough of Manhattan Community College. I would like to continue my studies at The City College of New York. For me, getting there is not easy. Getting to where I am was not easy either but I am here. However, I was never promised an easy ride which makes the journey to my career goal that much more interesting. I know that when I get there I will be completely satisfied because I worked very hard to reach my destination.

I am currently a student at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. My current major is Forensic Science and my plan is to transfer to John Jay College of Criminal Justice. My desire is to become a Forensic scientist or a medical examiner but I am still undecided. Maybe I can combine the two disciplines since each field requires the process of investigating, examining and analyzing data.

After I graduate from BMCC I would like to further my education at Hunter College. I would like to study nursing and eventually become a nurse certified midwife, but that isn’t my ultimate goal. What I would really like to become is a neonatologist. My plan to get to this goal is to first, become a nurse certified midwife and then work while I attend medical school. I don’t want to rush or dive straight into medical school because I’m not sure if I can handle all the heavy load of work that comes along with it all at once. Studying nursing will hopefully give me a small perspective as to what medical school may be like so that way I’m better prepared for it. I want to take my time getting to where I want to be so that way I gain more knowledge and experience so I can be great at what I do.

I have always been passionate about health and wellness. As a former competitive athlete, eating well and training were always a part of my daily life. I truly believe that fueling one’s body with nutrient dense foods and prioritizing physical fitness transcends to every other part of one’s life, including mental health, relationships with others, and self-worth. After working several years in an industry in which fulfillment and happiness were not part of the equation, I decided to make a change to do something that has always been a part of my daily life. Therefore, I plan to start a graduate program in Nutrition in the near future and become a Registered Dietician.

I have an interest in working with elite athletes in sports nutrition, working in clinical practice with patients suffering with various illnesses, such as eating disorders, autoimmune diseases, and obesity-related illnesses, as well as working in public health and nutrition education, teaching the bare bones of good nutrition to children and adults alike. I like to keep abreast of the latest nutritional studies and information and dispel myths about food that my colleagues and friends believe. I’m also an avid follower of Michael Pollan, and wholeheartedly agree with his seven-word summation of health and food, “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.” Although I do not yet know where I would like to focus my attention in the field, I do know that I am looking forward to delving headfirst into a career in nutrition.

I am currently a science major at BMCC and this is my final semester. I have been accepted in to the veterinary nursing program at the State University of Canton. In approximately two years, I will graduate from Canton University with Bachelors of Science in Veterinary Nursing. I am still undecided on whether to work right after graduating from Canton or continue on to graduate school. My plan is to obtain a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree where I can pursue my dream of working as a wildlife veterinarian. I would like to dedicate the rest of my life to preserving wildlife and help prevent extinction of certain species of animals that are victims of poaching.

I started out as an engineering major but I realized very late into college that it is not the career that I want to pursue. I can’t take back the time I lost following this major but I won’t waste it. I intend to switch majors and study graphic design and animation. Work on making new characters and places on a computer in order to tell a story. I have not decided where I will continue my studies after BMCC but I have the School of Visual Arts on my radar.

Thorium (Th)

My future goal is to become an engineer in the field of robotics and cybernetics.  I have already taken my first step on this path by starting at BMCC; my next step is to transfer to New York University and get my undergraduate degree in electrical engineering.  While pursuing my undergrad I will find a specialty to focus on to help move me forward.  My first job will hopefully be at the IBM Watson Center here in New York.  I expect that working at IBM in one of their cutting edge areas will help me gain important skills in machine learning and computer programming.  After this my path is undecided, it will really depend on where the innovations are happening and the current state of the field, but forward is the only way ahead.
