Week 13: Rose ch 7-8 and epilogue

Write a 200-350 word abstract* for your research paper. In addition, write a brief (1-2 paragraph) reflection on where you see yourself in the Rose section for today. Does he describe an experience that you’ve had? Maybe he articulates a feeling you’ve shared.

*An abstract is a short summary of a larger work. UW-Madison’s Writing Center has a good overview of abstracts: “Remember that your abstract is a description of your project (what you specifically are doing) and not a description of your topic (whatever you’re doing the project on). It is easy to get these two types of description confused. Since abstracts are generally very short, it’s important that you don’t get bogged down in a summary of the entire background of your topic.”

  1. In my research paper, the objective is to show that a combination of both discovery and guided learning is needed for success in one’s education. The initial method was taking what had inspired me and sparked an interest from Mike Rose’s Lives On the Boundary. The next method was finding research that pertained to this in terms of higher education. The articles I found were the maneuver allowing for me to expand upon my thinking. There are broad range of strategies and methods when it comes to learning. The result for incorporating higher education was in the different classroom types in colleges. We have the common lecture and then also the smaller classroom sizes. There is also this fact that we each have had different learning experiences before entering this new, vast world of college. Research was founded that included experiments done with these two different learning methods of guided versus structured inquiry. There are a number of factors and reasons for why we learn the way we learn. In this paper, these factors will appear evident. As individuals, it’s up to us to decide what we are going to do with the material that we learn. There should never be any limitations on the way we learn, but there should be a structure. My research paper will explore and elaborate more on what this structure is.

    The first section of Chapter 7 sparks this sense of familiarly as a college student. I like the description of the process of finding a seat and how he says “You are taking notes on a lecture you don’t understand.” (168) As students, we may have similar thoughts when taking classes where the subject does not interest us. As primarily being an undecided major, I was always looking for a moment in a class that would fascinate me. There is a mention of “countering loneliness.” (174) When first entering college, I did not know what it was going to be like. I was scared for this transition of entering this new world, yet excited at the same time.
    Andrea would sit with her books for hours studying , by highlighting and memorizing. The test did not line up with this method of memorizing, yet required for problems to be solved. (175) This is also familiar to me because there have been times where I have studied and the test was something that I did not expect. Everyone has this different reaction to this failure, including me. This has changed throughout the years because of all my different experiences in education.
    The last line of the epilogue is where I see myself in this Rose section. This line states “But it is not terror that fosters learning, it is hope, everyday heroics, the power of the common play of the human mind.” (242) I agree with this because everyday bring about a new learning experience. There are new lessons, teachers, people and situations that are contributing to this common play.

  2. My research topic is the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and school performance. I have breakdown my research paper into precise sections. I will discuss about the statistics of the vocabulary level of our modern students. Next, I will also elaborate on why vocabulary is important to a student’s school performance. I decided to tackle on Elementary school system: how it works and how vocabulary learning is also applied on the students. I also tackled on the SAT exam and what it tests the student. Also, the influences of vocabulary and why people have such difference. And how do students with poor vocabulary knowledge perform in school. I will also use the examples given in Mike Rose’s book. I will demonstrate how vocabulary influence our life and not just in our schooling. Vocabulary influences our daily life/career life/ social life in certain ways. I used many directly quote to explicitly show the importance of vocabulary.

    I really see myself in chapter7-8 of Mike Rose’s book. I agree with him how student just take notes like a machine and not learn the materials. And when the students are copying down the notes; they will miss out what the teacher is saying. “you are taking notes on a lecture that you don’t understand…..maybe tomorrow this will be easier” (168) This is true when we are not learning anything, and think that we will get it after the next lesson. We go to class because we have to go not because we want to go. We are all here for a college degree to get a decent job. On page 173, I feel the same as that student, Tony, that sometimes you over-rated yourself. As he mentioned “cause I took advanced English in high school” (173) He thinks he doesn’t belong in remedial class because I performed well back in high school. In my opinion, the past is the past. And you’re just starting from scratch once you enter college. Different professors will point out your mistakes or things you have to improve on. Therefore, as students, we should always take teacher’s advices.

My research will extract from Mike Rose’s novel, Lives on the Boundary, on the notion of demonstrating the positive benefits of incorporating popular media as a direct approach to touch the lives of his diverse group of students. Public television had played a crucial role towards youth in contemporary modern American society. It is often thought, especially amongst educators that technological media such as television will hinder a child’s literacy development. This is because youth would spend less time reading books which will likely result in a decline in academic literacy scores. This is not always the case regarding public television. Literacy in children television program as well as the type of program (that being but does not adhere to educational, non-fiction, and even animated genres of television), has influenced a child’s ability to become literate. Results on how the children television programs impact literacy skills depend and vary on the content the children view, the interaction between viewer and the program, captioning (seeing and hearing words), as well as the amount of time a child spends in front of the television. In addition, focusing on an area of children with disabilities and the education impact they experience in their literacy, as well as considering the negative effects television has on youth.
    After reading Mike Rose’s novel, Lives on the Boundary, I immediately thought about the first paragraph of the preface where Rose states “This is a hopeful book about those who fail…. it is a book about the abilities hidden by class and cultural barrier. And it is a book about movement: about what happens as people who have failed begin to participate in the educational system that has seemed so harsh and distant to them” (xi). In the epilogue, Lilia was labeled as a “slow learner” and it sicken me. . It sickened me that her entire life focused around under the label “slow” and made her actually believe that she was “dumb”. As Daniela said in her blog post, “everyone has this different reaction to this failure”, and in Lilia’s case, being able to have a fresh start at a new school and free herself from the so called “slow” student. I feel that I can relate, in high school I was labeled as a “smart” and “fast” student, however, because of this, those around me were not up to the idea of even challenging this fact. They failed to participate in classrooms because of a certain dominance I had towards them, I feel guilty because I knew they were smart, they just became hopeless to even bother trying. Rose utilizes Lilia as a figure of hope for students who experience disadvantages and who live under labels that undermine them. I feel that Rose literary went around a full and complete circle in his novel because Lilia and Rose shared many similarities, almost as if an epiphany. I see myself following Rose’s footsteps, from reading this book I have learned the beauty of teaching. I remember ever since I was a child, I admired my teachers, I wanted to become just like them. When I landed my first tutoring job there was never a dull moment especially when I actually had the student learn. Starting college, I was really concerned and didn’t decide to major in education, specifically teaching math. Now that I have read Rose’s novel, I am up to the challenge and will reconsider my path and career choice.

  4. We all read about Harold in “Lives on the Boundary” by Mike Rose, and we all felt bad for Harold. Harold was mistaken and misunderstood. I bring up ways we can help students with disabilities get the attention and accommodations they deserve. Whether it’s programs or new laws such as Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Another goal would be to raise the percentage of students with disabilities graduating for high school. As well as what will they do after high school. What options do they have? I ensure that we don’t have another incident like Harold’s, we focus on the students and their education no matter if they have a disability because they matter as well.

    I have the same idea as Wenli, “You are taking notes on a lecture you don’t understand. You get a phrase, sentence, then the next uses you” (page 168) I wouldn’t say I have severe ADHD, but there are definitely times where I can’t focus on simple things, I hear a sound and my mind goes somewhere else. It’s like the same thing when I read. When I read, I can read about two paragraphs without getting distracted, then once it gets boring a word sticks out. I associate that word with something and it becomes a story, a memory, a daydream. I make up anything based off of this one word all while I read the next page. I read the words but I don’t understand them.

  5. In my research paper, I describe the impact a different attitude and some technology can have on a group of students. I also go into how the past ten years we have seen the increase of attention that is being payed to the students who are at the lower end of the spectrum and need more help than others. We see through some of the highlighted methods that i displayed in my essay, being implemented in class rooms today. This issue connects with Mike Rose not only because he at one point was a student lost in the cracks of the education system, but also went back into poverty stricken areas to help the children realize the potential that they all hold within themselves.

    Chapters 7-8 are very relatable to how students approach their education even today. Students have become accustomed to not necessarily learning anything from their teachers. the learning experience has become one that lacks the golden social interactions that a class room should contain between instructor and student. Instead it has become that of an assembly line of a constant presentation of information, memorization, examination and ultimately forgetting the material. Their no longer really is any learning.

  6. In research paper i have discussion whether higher education guarantees you better life. I explain it by taking regards of many examples of Wealthy successful person of 20 th and 21 th century like Bill Gates , Mark Zuckerberg and Benjamin Goering who did not receive formal education, but become successful in their life. Higher education is a part of path of success, it also depend upon other factors like passion, desire, hard work and intended major, job demand and sometime it also depends on luck. Major are not equal in sense of money and job. Many major has highest unemployment rate and many has lowest unemployment rate. Due to increase in tuition fee many students graduates with burden of debt and for many higher education regard as a waste of time.
    At this point Mike Rose sharing his experience as a educator for Teachers Corps and the Veterans Program, he really got a confident and learn many thing from his own mistakes. The whole journey from a student to a teacher show individual struggles . The first para of eight chapter is main point of this point. I really like his point about teacher and student. If teacher shows the positive feedback of his paper, then student will continues doing his paper, but if the teacher shows negative feedback then student got disturb. I think i had have this experience , when my professor gave me feedback me even at worse paper, i felt very happy and promise myself that i will never give up my.

  7. In my research paper i discuss the elements in our society that lead to educational inequality. I introduce the idea through Rose, and how he describes the unfair treatment given to students. Be it by testing or judgement do to the fact that he is from a different social class. I start with the definition of Intelligence according to psychologists and how there are many different theories. I then explain that there is no one correct way to test a child. Then i delve into the social aspect of my topic, how people are treated wrongfully if they come from poor situations. lastly i explained the political views on inequality, such as segregation. I conclude with the fact that America is far from perfect and people must be aware of this in order to establish the right kind of change.
    I really appreciated many aspects in the last chapters of Mike Rose. He gave it a good structure and made me feel like i connected with many of the students. i especially liked the epilogue. How Lillian says ” opening new horizons for me, scary, but showing me what was out there. It reminds me of so many times when I’m afraid to try something unknown only to realize it was not so bad, and i learned a lot.

  8. My paper will mostly focus on children who aren’t capable to have the same education, in which home environment plays an important role in children’s education so they can succeed in the future. However, most of the children don’t have enough resources to help them build their knowledge. In the other hand the home environment can mostly impact children negatively or positively due to their surroundings. Therefore, Mike Rose Lives on the Boundaries, indicate the difficulties that students who faced to achieve their knowledge. Also in comparison to how Mike Rose’s book, studies have determined that children who have a negative impact in their homes, have a harder time to develop their cognitive minds. In other words, the neighborhood is also what makes them become better, due to the influence of other families. For this research I would have to look for the family background and their education status to determine the children’s outcome. Most importantly look at how much access they have to materials, and whether or not the parents have access as well. Most children who don’t come from immigrant parents. Therefore, children who do come from immigrant parents have this fear of communication due to the lack of language, and not knowing if they can have access to those materials.
    After reading Mike Rose, Lives on the Boundaries, I see myself in most of the children’s position. For example when Mike Rose states that he sees children having a difficult times coming up with words, I do see myself in that position because even though I was born an American I still have a difficult times with using proper college vocabulary. Also I did have professors who made me feel down, due to not writing a proper essay; therefore I never gave up and found ways to improve my writing. I like how Mike Rose different situations throughout the book, and children’s experience, where later on are able to succeed. Chapters 7, and 8 give a brief outcome of his students, who were below grade level and managed to graduate with grades that impact him as well. The experiences and the stories behind each students helped him realize that if students did have this type of help or someone to guide them and understand what they’re going through, then they will be able to gain knowledge providing those students with better opportunities.

  9. My paper examines different studies on today’s evaluation of students with learning disabilities. It looks at the current process of placing them into different settings for different levels of learning disabilities. It then continues to look at the cons and pros of today’s system of determining which students need help and further evaluation, and if it has helped with the quality of the educators.

  10. In my research paper, I focus on the pros and cons of inclusive learning classrooms. In my reserach I looked at sources that included studies of how inclusive classrooms benefits its students as well as how it may hold students back. Students with learning disablities and students without learning disabilites learn differently, but when put into the same environment it can be both beneficial as well as the opposite. My research will look into how inclusive classrooms help/does not help both types of students.

  11. My Research paper is based on gender differences with depression in college students. Specifically focusing on the traits that result in one gender facing more depression than the other. Through extensive research, my aim is to highlight how gender plays a major role in the way one reacts/find solutions to alleviate depression. Due to an overload of school work, peer pressure and even the pressure from parents, students can lead into a phase of depression and I hope to find possible solutions/services that will help students fight this illness.
    Mike Rose book really revealed that everyone learns differently. Students learn at different paces by different methods. It’s important not to treat those students who need more help as an outcast, because they too are gifted achievers.

  12. My research topic is focused on how high school students, when making that transition into college, find themselves under prepared. My definition of under prepared looks at both the mental and academic aspects. The point I want to stress the most is the fact that many incoming freshman face this problem of being under prepared and that it has gotten to the point where its not found unusual. I will also examine where people place the blame (whether they look at the high schools to blame or if they look somewhere else. And what are the causes or the reason(s) behind these high school students being under prepared I will definitely use parts of Mike Rose’s book and the podcast, Three Miles (with many other sources) to help back my claims.
    A specific part in Mike Rose’s book that spoke the most to me was where he said students can walk around their campus and not be greeted by anyone who knew anything about them. I felt this was very significant because many students will face this and even when I began college I had the same feeling. As Kathy stated, “It feels weird” (page 174) I think she summed up the feeling best because its a new experience many aren’t used to.
