Why study theatre?

February 19, 2015 in uncategorized by Ryan Donovan

I’d like to draw your attention to two recent articles by Frank Bruni about his college experience studying Shakespeare. I’m sharing this with you all in order to prompt us to think about how our subject of inquiry this semester might resonate with us in unexpected times and place. Check them out here and here.

Bruni also wonderfully, I think, elucidates what part of college’s purpose is and can be. Surely, professionalization is important and getting a well paying career is a large part of what we are doing, but only focusing on this goal makes it all too easy to close ourselves off to the possibility of college as “a steppingstone to a more aware, thoughtful existence” as Bruni writes.

Food for thought.

Why are we mapping?

Curious about how and why we will be mapping? Check out this blog post by my professor, Cathy Davidson.

There will be a reception at the Graduate Center on May 22 for all of you as both a celebration of the work you’ve accomplished this semester and as a way to see how your work connects with other students at other CUNY campuses.

Hello students!

Welcome to Mapping the Futures of Higher Education Sites.

This site will serve as the online portal for our class this spring. In the group associated with this site, you will find course documents and other important information. Think of the group as the backstage area of this online theatre, and the site as the onstage performance.

This is your site and here is where you will share the work you produce in class. Together we will build an interactive digital map of the productions you all have seen for the class.

Please register for this site and also join the group associated with the class.
