Hello everyone, and happy Friday!
The Futures Initiative will be hosting a two-day mentoring training workshop this summer, August 18-19. This is a terrific opportunity if you’d like to take on a leadership role on your campus and go deeper into the methods we’ve explored this semester. For more details, see Cathy’s recent post on the topic.
Thanks to generous assistance from CUNY Central, we will be able to offer each undergraduate participant $200 to participate in this workshop and two round-trip MetroCards. In addition, you will be able to list on your resumes that you were selected to be part of this very special peer mentoring program.
The commitment you make, by participating, will be to help next year’s cohort of some 1500+ undergraduates in Futures Initiative courses or, in some cases, you might serve as peer mentors in courses they completed successfully themselves this year. Research shows that serving as a peer mentor is an excellent way for you to learn the material even more deeply and to help your own success while helping others. It is also an excellent way to gain a variety of skills that will be beneficial for many careers that require collaboration with others, learning with and from others, helping others towards a goal, and working in teams. Peer mentoring emphasizes leadership, organizational, project management, time management, and community-building skills as well as field mastery.
If you are a student in one of the Mapping the Futures courses this semester, and you’re interested in participating in this workshop, please apply now: http://bit.ly/mentorship-undergrads. Applications are due May 8 and selected participants will be announced at the reception on May 22.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me (krogers@gc.cuny.edu) or the professor of your course.
Thank you all!
Best,
Katina
