Richard Lissemore edited the blog post What’s the point of being a professor? in the group
Mapping the Futures of Higher Education: 7 years, 6 months ago
In today’s New York Times, Emory University professor Mark Bauerlein offers a stinging criticism of the culture of higher education. He bemoans the fact that 43% of students are given As for their work (it was only 15% decades ago) and that more than 80% of students are more concerned with making money than they are with moral and worldly…[Read more]

If chosen, you will be paid $200 for the two days and will be given…[Read more]

You should only be using Worksheet #9, which is for 6c. 57 questions
The 6c quiz was a mistake and has been removed. It was from another semester. I’ve simplified things.

This is so great Natalie. Isn’t it amazing that even half the class is open to the idea of contemplative pedagogy? I think it really speaks to an underlying yearning for something deeper, more substantial. I love that you used ‘dreamy chords’ as the subject of the focused attention, and having students write a word on the board as they left class…[Read more]

I actually found that to be true. I worked on the diagrams during the break and found I was able to remember more than I usually do. Hopefully I have found the secret for this exam.

The first video is not playing properly on my laptop but the second video is. Anyone else having that problem?
Wesch’s closing remarks about the virtuous cycle of play are really moving and thought-provoking. Fantastic. Thanks for posting.

Wow, Irene! I think your attendance policy is extremely generous, especially since its 10% of their grade.
I give weekly quizzes that count as 30% of their grade but they get to drop the two lowest grades, which includes the missed quizzes. And I thought my class policy was generous!

Thanks for the prompt Rachel, Natalie, and Evan.
Though I’ve only been teaching at Lehman a short while (this is my second semester), it has become obvious that a great many of my students are dealing with personal issues that are causing them tremendous stress, and in some situations, seriously interfering with their ability to succeed in their…[Read more]
